WHAT TO WHERE GUIDE
- My number one piece of ‘what to wear’ advice: coordinating is good, matching is not so good. You do not want to all be wearing the same color, print or outfit. It does not photograph well and looks flat.
- Neutral colors are a great place to start (gray, cream, brown, khaki, denim). These colors tend to photograph well in any setting or season.
- Think about the location and season and go with colors that compliment your when and where you will be taking pictures. For example, if you are taking pictures at a park in summer (very green time of year), avoid wearing a lot of green. Or if you are taking pictures at the Nerman Museum of Art, a very white/neutral location, wearing brighter colors/prints/patterns work well!
- When you’re figuring out what to wear, start with mom. Mom should feel confident in her outfit and that doesn’t always happen when she saves her outfit choice for last.
- For women, flowy skirts or maxi dresses give a lot of movement and that brings dimension, which photographs beautifully.
- Coordinating colors/patterns: try to stick with 2-3 complimenting colors, then add a ‘pop’ of color to really accentuate your outfit choices. As much as I love earth tones and those organic colors, adding a little pop of color can really add an extra touch to your photo session!
- Patterns, textures and layers add dimension.
- Accessories are an easy way to add that pop of color or dimension in your photos. Jewelry, scarves, necklaces, hair accessories, watches, earrings, etc. The small details make a big impact in your photos. It’s all in the details!
- Neon and super bright colors can cause color casting onto your skin. Avoid solid vibrant colors and anything with neon.
- Small lines close together (tight pinstripes and/or plaids) do not photograph well and almost add a weird 3D effect/optical illusion to your photos (which does not look good).
